Plant Description

Origin: Native  Similar Species: Rosa arizonica
General Description: Deciduous. Similar to Rosa arizonica but grows taller, has smaller thorns and larger flowers. Leaflets mostly 5 or 7, up to 1 inch long, saw-like toothed, oval, hairless or fine, short hairs below. Flowers 1 to 4 at the ends of lateral shoots; Petals 3/4 inch long.
Identification notes: Leaflets mostly 5 or 7, up to 1 inch long, distinctly longer than wide, saw-like toothed, oval to egg-shape, hairless or fine, short hairs below, armed with straight or curved prickles; Flowers 1 to 4 at the ends of lateral shoots that grow from old wood.
Height: 16 feet     Width: 4 feet


Habitat

Habitat Description: Often along streams or moist habitats and in pine forests.
Plant Communities: Pinyon Juniper Woodland, Montane Conifer Forest, Riparian
Elevation: 4000 - 9000 feet


Flowers

Color: Light pink to deep rose   Shape: Regular, not in clusters    Tubular: N   Flowering Period: May - Aug
Description: Fragrant with 5 broad pink petals and yellow stamens to 2-1/4 inches wide.

Leaf Color: Dark Green   Type: Compound   Shape: Round or oval   Margin: Toothed   Attachment: Alternate   Hairs: N
Description: Pinnate, 3 to 7 toothed, oval to narrow oval leaflets to 1 inch long.


Fruit

Color: Red-orange to purple or black   Type: Berry-like   Description: Fruit berry-like (hip) that turns red when mature, long, narrow oval to almost globe-shaped, 1/2 inch in diameter.


Bark/Branches

Bark Color: Reddish   Bark Texture (Mature): Rough   Bark and Branch Description: Thorns are short, red, slender and nearly straight with reddish stems.
